Usually means the application of a coloured background (often yellow) to text or numbers that would otherwise be on a white background and be in the context of other text or numbers on a white background. However applies also to fonts or font colours, variations of which may be used for example to differentiate functions from variables in source code, or the speech of one person from another when written.
