I'm experiencing a strange issue with mouse and trackpad clicks on macOS Sonoma 14.5 (MacBook Pro). When I click, the action is not registered immediately upon pressing the button. Instead, the click is executed when I release the button.

This behavior seems to affect macOS itself and native apps (e.g. dropdown menus) but does not occur in web browsers or web-based applications (excepted built-in macOS dropdown or elements, etc).

This causes problems when I click on an element but slightly move the cursor before releasing, it registers the click on whatever element is under the cursor at release time, not at the initial press.

What I have tried:

  • Tested with both the built-in trackpad and an external mouse (same issue on both).
  • Checked System Settings → Mouse and Trackpad for any options related to click delay but found nothing relevant.
  • Disabled any accessibility settings that could interfere, such as sticky keys or pointer control options.

I think this might be the intended behavior in macOS Sonoma, but I really don’t like it and find it very impractical.

Has anyone encountered this issue before?

Are there any hidden settings or Terminal commands that could affect this behavior?
