I recently installed Windows Terminal Preview and already made wt.exe open it up. Now I want it to open when starting powershell.exe from Start Menu, Run dialog or Windows Explorer's address bar.

How to set this up?

You can set the "Default terminal application" by going to any one of

  • the Terminal settings page, under Startup>Default Terminal Application

Screenshot of the Terminal Settings page showing the drop-down menu for selecting the 'Default terminal application'.

  • The Windows Settings, under System>For Developers>Terminal or ms-settings:developers

Screenshot of the Windows Settings page showing the drop-down menu to 'Choose the default terminal app'.

  • The vintage windows console property sheet, under the Terminal tab

Screenshot of the conhost.exe's Properties window with the drop-down menu for the 'Default Terminal Application'.

There, you can pick whichever version of Terminal you want to be the default terminal that's opened when you directly launch a CLI application.
