I'm building a custom 3D printer (based on a Prusa MK3) which I want to be as silent as possible.
I exchanged the ball bearings for Igus polymer bearings and I run the motors in Steath mode.
However in my experience fans are one of the noisiest parts of the 3D printer, so I definetely want to get rid of them.
I modified the X axis, so the the heatsink of the head is mounted into an aluminum plate that has additional heatsinks. With that I managed to remove the fan that cools the heatsink.
However, 3D printers also have a blower fan that blows air into the material that has been just extruded in order to cool it down before the next layer is printed.
Are this blowers really needed? I'd really like to get rid of this blowers since they are a significant source of noise.
Has anyone tried getting rid of the blower and managed to get good prints?
