I am working on something strange and I ran across this issue. Take a number such as $7$, it has a decimal inverse of ($0.142857$) looping. This loop is 6 digits. Is there a number whose loop is $19$ digits?

2Surely you meant 142857 for 1/7? – Dan Mar 07 '25 at 17:40

@KaryonTrotters: WolframAlpha says that 1/211 has a period of 30. – Dan Mar 07 '25 at 17:48

2@Dan I mentioned that is from ChatGPT. Hence, proved ChatGPT is unreliable – Random Math Enthusiast Mar 07 '25 at 17:49

@Dan One doesn't need a computer to tell that the period must be a divisor of $210$, and $19$ isn't. It's a hallucination, those AIs are good at it. – Mar 07 '25 at 17:51

Those sequences are generated by division with remainder, taking the integer part into the sequence and continue with 10 times the remainder. – Gyro Gearloose Mar 07 '25 at 17:52

We know ChatGPT isn't reliable, we don't need more proof of that - so please don't waste our time with it's hallucinations. – Henrik supports the community Mar 07 '25 at 22:28
